Thankful for DIY
There’s kind of a phenomenon happening that makes it really great to be in art today. I think it kind of goes hand and hand with what Frank Chimero was saying about what Richard King was saying about the term ‘Indie’.
Regardless of how you feel about the over usage of that term, I feel like we are living in the most ripe time for DIY.
10 years ago I could never get funding to make 260 characters into screen prints, and I think this is because it doesn’t fit into any market or category neatly. It’s not a book, album or painting, it’s not even a show poster and it barely fits under ‘art print’.
That used to matter because the people who had the resources had all the equipment and marketing means, and they had to cosign your idea. They weren’t going to risk trying to market something people didn’t already understand.
Now though if you are doing something interesting, or you have people who somehow have engaged into what you are doing, you can do anything. This just totally breaks the walls down. If you do something people are moved by, they will invest the time to understand, and be part of it. (examples: Anticon, Asthmatic Kitty / Sufjan, Will Oldham, Little Wings, ISO50 / Scott Hansen / Tycho, Animal Collective)
Really I just want to say thanks for supporting me, thanks for being part of my team here on the blog, and with all things NOD, my dreams are coming true without a middle man, which makes this such an intimate experience.
So thanks.
